Shepherd's Pie comes to us from England, and is traditionally made with lamb or mutton. Here in the states we are more of a beef eating culture than a lamb eating one, and when one is served..with the kind of refrigeration we had in our homes, cooked meat could be kept much more safely than raw.

Ingredients of Shepherd’s Pie

  1. Take 3 of carrots.
  2. Prepare 1 of onion.
  3. Take 1 tbsp of olive oil.
  4. It’s 500 g of minced lamb.
  5. Take of Large splash Worcestershire sauce.
  6. You need 2 tbsp of tomato puree.
  7. Make ready 2 of low salt beef stock cubes.
  8. It’s 1 kg of potatoes.
  9. Take of Large splash of milk.
  10. It’s Knob of butter.
  11. Take of Pepper to season.

Shepherd’s Pie instructions

  1. Slice carrots and onion and gently fry in olive oil for 5 minutes in a large pan.
  2. Turn heat to maximum temperature and add the minced lamb.
  3. Once lamb is browned stir in tomato purée and Worcestershire sauce and fry for a few minutes.
  4. Add 2 beef stock cubes to 500ml boiling water and add this to the pan.
  5. Bring to the boil, then turn down the heat and simmer gently for 40 minutes.
  6. Peel the potatoes and slice into small chunks and place into a saucepan.
  7. Cover them with boiling water and simmer for 20 minutes.
  8. Pre heat oven to 180 degrees. When potatoes are soft, add milk and butter and mash them until creamy.
  9. Place lamb mixture into ovenproof dish.
  10. Place mash potato on top of the mixture and use a fork to spread evenly.
  11. Bake for 20 minutes.
